The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage lies in the middle of a triangle of 3 quaint rural villages - Tollerton, Shipton by Beningbrough and Newton on Ouse.

NEWTON ON OUSE (less than 2 miles)
The picture postcard village of Newton On Ouse is less than 2 miles from The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage and lies on the banks of Yorkshire's River Ouse, as it winds through North Yorkshire on its way to York At the heart of Newton on Ouse village is Cherry Tree Avenue, which boasts an avenue of cherry trees, providing a stunning blossom abundant spectacle in the spring. Newton on Ouse also offers two character village pubs and a pretty church, whilst at the end of Cherry Tree Avenue lie the impressive gates to the National Trust property - Beningbrough Hall.

The Blacksmiths Arms - A traditional village pub, The Blacksmiths Arms provides a warm welcome to locals and visitors alike. Offering traditional home cooked pub food and an excellent choice of beers, wines and spirits, The Blacksmiths Arms' beer garden on the Village's Cherry Tree Avenue is in the shadow of the village's parish church and a great place to enjoy a quiet drink and absorb village life.

The Dawnay Arms - A contemporary gastro pub, The Dawnay Arms was built in 1779 and has gardens sloping down to the river Ouse and a private mooring jetty for passing river craft, Inside The Dawnay Arms provides a cosy, yet contemporary atmosphere with several dining and bar areas as well as a comfortable restaurant offering an extensive menu of fine foods.


LINTON-ON-OUSE (less than 3 miles)
Linton-on-Ouse lies on the upper banks of the River Ouse on a country road. which ultimately connects the A19 and the A1. With some parts of the village dating back some 200 years, Linton on Ouse is also home to an RAF Training base, more recently where Prince William undertook training prior to getting his pilots wings.

The College Arms - This local pub offers a warm Yorkshire welcome with a wide choice of beers, ales and spirits. With SKY TV, pool table and dart board, the lounge offers all the traditional pastimes of a local pub. Diners can choose from an extensive Indian menu served in the conservatory restaurant.


SHIPTON BY BENINGBROUGH (under 2 miles)

The village of Shipton less than 5 minutes from the Owl Barn Holiday Cottage was first mentioned in 1066, in the Domesday book and was in the heart of the Royal Forest of Galtres, where English monarchs loved to hunt. Today it is on a major route from York to the North East.

The Dawnay Arms - On the main street of Shipton by Beningbrough, The Dawnay Arms is a locals' pub with a warm welcome for passing visitors. Situated on the side of the A19 a main route into the city of York, the pub offers great beverages and home cooked traditional pub foods.


TOLLERTON ( under 2 miles)
Tollerton is situated in the Vale of York, just 10 miles North of York and 5 miles South of Easingwold and minutes from the Owl Barn Holiday Cottage. Tollerton is a pretty village with a village green and main street winding down to The River Kyle. The village has an acclaimed village store.

The Black Horse Inn dates back to the mid 18th Century, when it was built as a coaching inn on the main toll road from York to the North. One of the few remaining pubs in the district with a traditional "Tap Room", as well as a Lounge Bar and charming Dining Room.

The Station Inn - The Canton Station Inn is both a Cantonese restaurant as well as a popular public house offering a choice of great chinese food and local ales.

HARROGATE

Harrogate is a Victorian Spa town originally frequented by the gentility to take the mineral spring waters - the discovery of the first spring dating back to 1571.

Today Harrogate retains its original air of sophistication with its grassy common area of some 200 acres "Harrogate Stray" itself overlooked and surrounded by numerous grand houses. Visitors can also enjoy Harrogate's stunning Valley Gardens and the beautifully preserved "Royal Pump House".

The town has however more contemporary facilities including the Harrogate International Conference Centre, host to International conventions, fairs and exhibitions, including amongst other regular events the famous Harrogate Toy Fair. Harrogate is also home to the Great Yorkshire Show, the counties most prestigious country show.

EASINGWOLD
An unspoilt Georgian market town in the Vale of York in the lee of the nearby Hambleton Hills, Easingwold is just 6 miles from the Owl Barn Cottage and just 10 miles from the York outer ring road. Easingwold has at its heart a traditional market square, surrounded by locally owned businesses, including butchers, bakeries, tea rooms, and delicatessens. For those wishing to browse there are also several interesting antique shops and a choice of unusual quality gift shops.

MALTON
The historic centre of Ryedale since Roman times Malton is a 30 minute drive from The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage. Malton is a great place for shopping, with lots of unique local individual shops clustered around the market square. Malton also has many places of historic interest with the original centre of Old Malton standing on the site of St Mary's a Gilbertine Priory.

HELMSLEY
Helmsley is a picturesque market town, less than 30 minutes' drive from The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage and is a popular stop off en route to the east coast and The North Yorkshire Moors. With its quaint stream running close to the market square, ruined castle, craft and antique shops and tea rooms, Helmsley has lots to offer.

THIRSK
Thirsk is an old fashioned market town in the Vale of Mowbray North Yorkshire, a short drive from The Owl Barn. Made famous as the ficticious "Darrowby" in the stories of James Herriot the country vet, Thirsk now boasts a visitor centre dedicated to the popular TV series.

RIPON
Ripon is an unspoilt cathedral city with a rich cultural heritage dating back to 657 AD .Nearby attractions include the World Heritage site of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Newby Hall (a stately home), the 14th century Ripley Castle, and Lightwater Valley theme park.

BENINGBROUGH HALL
Less than 3 miles from The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage, this National Trust owned stately home dates back to 1716 and is a grand mansion with a stunning baroque interior. Situated in extensive parkland and with beautiful gardens, including a walled kitchen garden which supplies the house's restaurant and tea room with fresh home grown produce, Beningbrough Hall also has a working Victorian laundry, whilst to entertain children, Beningbrough Hall has an exciting children's playground and wilderness play area.

SUTTON PARK
Built in the 18th century, Sutton Park ( only a 20 minute drive from The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage) is now the home of The Sheffield's, many of the items were originally from the family's London home, originally called Buckingham House but now known the world over as Buckingham Palace. Sutton Park has extensive grounds with award winning gardens and a courtyard tea room.

THE WHITE HORSE
A huge chalk figure carved out of the hillside of the Hambleton Hills, The White Horse is on the edge of Sutton Bank dominating the Vale of York and can even be seen in the distance from the road to The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage, on a clear fine day. From The White Horse enjoy stunning views of the Vale, take one of the numerous walks to enjoy the scenery or watch the gliders from the nearby Gliding club as they swoop over the rolling landscape.

At the foot of the hills is the village of Kilburn, home of the North Yorkshire craftsman known affectionately as "The Mouseman of Kilburn".

The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage - near York, is the perfect base from which to enjoy a range of sports and country pursuits. The country roads, nearby villages and The River Ouse less than 2 miles away, makes walking, cycling, fishing or taking part in watersports very easy.

GOLF
There is a choice of excellent golf courses close to The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage:-

Aldwark Manor Golf Course is a 18 hole parkland course set in 120 acres in the Vale of York. The easy walking parkland par 72, 6187-yard course has many interesting features including water hazards, some rare and mature trees and a number of fairways meandering and intertwined with the River Ure.

Pike Hills Golf Club is 10 minutes from The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage, to the south west of York just off the A64. The 18 hole 6,146 yards parkland course, has an SSS of 70 and par 7.With fairways lined with trees, the course has abundant wildlife, including deer squirrels, rabbits and a variety of birds.

Easingwold Golf Club - Just a short 10 minute drive from The Owl Barn Cottage. Easingwold Golf Course offers 18 holes in parkland and heathland and is one of the best courses in the area, providing a challenging, manageable, and enjoyable golfing experience.


RACING
North Yorkshire boasts a range of wonderful racecourses, York, Thirsk, Ripon, Wetherby and Catterick as well as Stables & Trainer Yards in Middleham, Malton & Masham.

York Racecourse - An award winning course, with grandstands and character buildings, York has a long history of racing. With meetings throughout the year from the Dante Festival in May to The October Finale, the season highlight is the August Ebor Festival

Thirsk Racecourse - In 2005, Thirsk Racecourse celebrated 150 years of flat racing . Only 20 minutes drive from The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage, Thirsk is a charming country course , which provides high quality racing in attractive surroundings.

Ripon Racecourse - Named Yorkshire's Garden Racecourse.Ripon racecourse in only 20 minutes drive from The Owl Barn Cottage in the historic town of Ripon. Here for more than 300 years Ripon been home to of some of Yorkshire's most famous and exciting racing.

Wetherby Racecourse - Wetherby Racecourse is just 25 minutes drive from The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage. Wetherby is Yorkshire's premier National Hunt racecourse and home to some of the most competitive races staged throughout the National Hunt Calendar.


HACKING
North Yorkshire is a great place to hack and there is a choice of riding stables close to The Owl Barn Holiday Cottage, offering horses available to ride out. For those wanting to bring their own horse, arrangements can be made and there is limited stabling available at The Owl Barn Cottage.
